Third Umpire

The introduction of technology into the game of cricket has largely been for the good. However, have you noticed how the on-field umpire refers every possible run out to the third umpire? In most cases, this could easily have been decided on the field and let the game move on instead of recurring stoppages. If you have played even a basic level of cricket, you clearly know the difference between a close call.

And so why does the on-field umpire refer to the third umpire when we already know the verdict? This would simply be to cover for the 1% probability that the verdict is otherwise. In the shoes of the on-field umpire, there is absolutely no incentive to not refer to the third umpire.

It seems bizarre when a commentator applauds an on-field umpire for giving a verdict without referring to the third umpire when this was really what was expected out of a good umpire not so while back. Today, a good umpire should be regarded as one who makes smart judgments on when to use technology and when to keep the game rolling.

It is no coincidence then that such scenarios also exist in our workplace. Some aspects are so obvious that you don't need the system to do the work for you. Don't dumb yourself down to the third umpire, figure out how to keep the game rolling.
