A travel guide is an expert. Someone who knows a particular terrain very well and can fulfill an information gap for your expedition. The travel guide is likely able to assure an outcome having done this so many times over the years. The expedition is also usually well charted out - you need to climb the Kilimanjaro - challenging task, but can be done. And you know you will need the type of expert to take you through.

At some stage in life, you simply want to climb a mountain that no one knows anything about. Who can you take along with you? A travel companion is someone who has proven skill sets that will be useful but more importantly is also willing to make the journey with you. The outcome is unknown but the chances are good. You appreciate that the travel companion is willing to devote time through this uncertainty.

With a travel guide, you know what you are paying for - you pay for a known result. With a travel companion, you pay for the journey, in the hope of a good result. Both services have a demand, but the guides are far more in number than the companions. If you know folks who have attributes of a travel companion, you will do well to always have them around in your network.
