Hairdresser 1: Peddles ideas on to you. Also to sell products or services. Your scalp is dry, do this. Your hair is thin, do that.
Hairdresser 2: Listens to your precise requirement. Doesn't talk much and focuses on delivering exactly that.
Hairdresser 3: Has a conversation with you about your blurry ideas. And comes up with something positively delightful. A hair cut experience.
Who's your hairdresser? If this question was pointed at your own preference, I have known folks who have refused to move town because they found the elusive hairdresser 3. Also known folks who are usually unsure about what they want and could use the help of hairdresser 1.
I go to hairdresser 2. While waiting for my turn, I was listening intently to some Lebanese students passionately explaining the hair style they wanted. It sounded like the thing to do these days. As I plonked myself in the chair, my hairdresser having noticed my interest casually prodded if I wanted something similar. I said, "why not", the Lebanese sure know their fashion. The outcome was an edgy haircut that not only garnered attention but also made me look 5 years younger. My usual hairdresser 2 turned up a hairdresser 3 act on this day.
So who's your hairdresser? If this question is rather pointed at what type of hair dressers you would look to have in your own hair dressing salon, the simple answer is - all of the above. They all have a role to play depending on the requirement of the client and that of the salon. However, if you have a hairdresser who can switch between the different types, just like my hairdresser 2 friend did - you may really want to hold on to such valuable talent.
